Janelle Monae | Metropolis/The ArchAndroid

For those in red, follow the instructions in your email blast to enjoy today’s double feature.

Incredibly ambitious and encompassing a wide spectrum of musical influences, ranging from hip hop, to James Brown-esque Funk, to indie-rock, to Beatles-esque psychedelia, to Off-the-Wall era Michael Jackson pop, Janelle Monae’s first two parts of her loosely tied together sci-fi concept opera have a little bit of everything for anyone. Where as Outkast’s Andre 3000 tried much of the same fusion on his The Love Below, he had far more misses than hits. Janelle Monae makes everything seem effortless. Forget Lady Gaga, I think we’ve found the most innovative young singer in pop music.
